Letter from the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA)

Dear President Varlotta and Members of the Antioch University Board of Governors,

On behalf of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA), I am writing to express our strong support for Antioch University and the preservation of its institutional independence, distinctive educational mission, and longstanding commitment to progressive education.

Antioch University has been an important partner in advancing Waldorf education in North America. Through its openness to educational approaches grounded in human development, creativity, and experiential learning, Antioch has provided an invaluable pathway for educators to pursue Waldorf teacher preparation within a university setting. This partnership exemplifies the value of an institution that embraces diverse educational philosophies and creates opportunities for innovative approaches to teaching and learning to flourish.

At a time when schools across the country face significant challenges in preparing and sustaining the next generation of teachers, partnerships such as ours are increasingly important. Antioch's commitment to academic integrity, and the development of thoughtful, capable educators extends well beyond its own community. Its work has a meaningful and lasting impact on the students served by its programs.

As Antioch navigates the current governance dispute with the Coalition for the Common Good, AWSNA strongly supports the preservation of the university's autonomy and its ability to determine its own educational direction through the leadership and governance structures entrusted with its mission.

We are deeply grateful for the faculty, leadership, and broader Antioch community whose dedication has made our partnership possible.

With appreciation and respect,

Beverly Amico
