When I heard about Antioch and Otterbein entering into the Coalition for the Common Good, I felt the decision was aligned with Antioch always being at the forefront of trying bold new ways to make education better for students. Educational leaders need to be thinking about creative solutions and how they can be partnering with each other.
However, the intent in Antioch's joining the Coalition was never to lose its power and equal standing. Antioch was the architect of the arrangement. It was Antioch's idea to create this new model, and we invited Otterbein into the arrangement.
Antioch University is my alma mater. I've served as a Board of Governor member, and I follow the field of higher education closely. I'm saddened that a smart and gutsy invitation to "raise all boats" has been met by a move to take over the institution that is Antioch University, an institution I've been affiliated with since the 1980s. This attempt by the Board of the Coalition is anything but in the interest of the Common Good.
